The word is out: Southwest Florida is where people want to be.

If you’re a member of Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980, there’s some compelling evidence that Southwest Florida belongs at the top of your relocation list.

According to U-Haul’s midyear 2026 migration analysis, Fort Myers ranked #1 in the entire United States for attracting Gen X movers.

That’s not just a local trend. U-Haul analyzed one-way truck, trailer and U-Box moves from July 2025 through June 2026 and ranked metropolitan areas based on their net gain of customers. Fort Myers came out on top nationally for Gen X migration.

And Florida isn’t attracting just one generation.

Florida ranked #1 among states for Gen X migration, #1 for millennials, and #3 for baby boomers. It was also the only state to rank in the Top 10 for net migration among all four generations analyzed.

In other words, people of all ages are choosing Florida.

Why Southwest Florida?

For Gen X buyers, the appeal is easy to understand.

Many are entering a new stage of life. The kids may be leaving home, careers may be becoming more flexible, and priorities are shifting toward lifestyle, sunshine, boating, beaches, outdoor recreation and a better quality of life.

And that’s where Cape Coral stands out.

Cape Coral offers something that many relocating buyers can’t find in other parts of Florida: waterfront living with choices.

Whether you’re looking for a Gulf-access home, a pool home, a condominium, a maintenance-free villa or a home with room to build your future, Cape Coral offers a tremendous variety of properties and lifestyles.

You can be on a canal with your boat behind your home, enjoy a pool and outdoor living year-round, or choose a home closer to shopping, restaurants, parks and entertainment.

The migration trend creates opportunity

Fort Myers being the nation’s #1 Gen X destination isn’t simply a statistic. It’s a signal.

People are moving here.

And when people move here, they need homes.

For buyers considering Southwest Florida, that continued migration is an important factor to consider. Waiting for the “perfect” market or hoping for dramatically lower prices can mean missing out on the opportunity to find the right property while choices are available.

For sellers, the migration trend is equally important. There is a large and growing pool of potential buyers looking beyond their current state and toward Southwest Florida.

The question isn’t whether people want to move to Florida.

The data says they do.

The question is:

Will you be one of them?

If you’re considering a move to Southwest Florida, let’s take a look at what Cape Coral has to offer. The right property may be closer than you think.
